Here are just a few quick observations of the new social media.
1. Most people are just watching or maybe don’t have time to be involved.
I had one friend on facebook that took over 6 months to respond to question. I have had many that have taken over a month to respond to a question. I have over 300 friends on face book which is not very much. But there is only about 10 15 that I interact with on a regular basis. I have 3500 followers on business twitter account and I have only had a conversation with about 15 to 20 of those folks
2. Some people are broadcasting.
I have a few friends that are constantly posting stuff all the time, where they’re going, what their eating for lunch, pictures of places they are visiting. But when I try to start a little conversation. nothing in response. I realize people are like that and so life goes on. Twitter is the worst right now. There are so many people constantly broadcasting they know the secrets to the universe, about money, products, philosophies. Also one of the problems with twitter is their are a bunch of automated tools that allow people to abuse the broadcasting.
3. Only a few are engaging.
This is the part that I really enjoy. I have always been social, I can blame that on my parents. My mom is always trying to visit and engage with people. I am the same way. So the social media is alluring to me. I love to have conversations and engage with people. I am becoming more efficient at doing this. It’s fun for me I realize there is a bunch more giving and a not much taking. My hope is that I can make a difference. My hope is that with this social media we will all engage more.
